Indoor Saunas Outside?

“Can I place my Zua Health Infrared Sauna outside?”

It’s a great question — especially for customers who have limited indoor space or dream of having a wellness retreat in their backyard or outdoor entertainment area. The short answer is yes, it’s possible — but not without proper protection and consideration. Let’s break it down so you can make the best decision for your space, your investment, and your long-term sauna experience.

Our Infrared Saunas Are Designed for Indoor Use

All Zua Health infrared saunas — including our one-person, two-person, and vibration models — are designed primarily for indoor use. This is largely due to their high-tech electrical components, which are not waterproof, or weather sealed. Located at the top of each unit, these electrical systems are sensitive to moisture, condensation, and humidity, all of which can pose a serious safety risk if exposed to the elements.

In addition, our saunas are constructed using premium Hemlock timber, which is ideal for indoor environments. While the timber is naturally resistant to rot and mildew, it’s still organic timber, and ongoing exposure to rain, humidity, wind, dust, and UV rays will eventually cause warping, fading, cracking, or deterioration. This can significantly reduce the visual appeal and structural integrity of the unit over time.

What If I Still Want It Outside?

If you are set on placing your sauna outside — such as under a veranda, pergola, alfresco, carport, or on a covered deck — it can be done if several key requirements are met. Here’s what you’ll need to ensure for long-term success:

Minimum Requirements for Outdoor Placement:

  • A permanent, solid overhead cover that completely protects the sauna from rainfall, condensation, and roof drips.
  • Side shielding or enclosure to reduce exposure to wind, dust, and sun.
  • A dry, well-ventilated location where moisture won’t collect beneath the sauna base.
  • Zero direct water exposure (no sprinklers, pool splashes, garden hose runoff, etc.)
  • Consider using a custom-fit weatherproof cover when the sauna is not in use to help further protect against dust and UV rays.

If you’re placing the sauna on a tiled patio or timber deck, we also recommend using rubber matting or elevated support beneath the base to promote air circulation and prevent trapped moisture.

Direct Sunlight: Why It’s a Concern

Another factor to consider is exposure to direct sunlight. Even though our saunas are high-quality and built to last, prolonged exposure to UV rays can bleach and degrade the timber finish over time. You may notice fading, drying, or changes in colour or texture. Additionally, extreme fluctuations in temperature and humidity (such as hot summer days followed by cool, damp nights) can lead to timber expansion and contraction, which could affect panel alignment or fit over the long term.

Sauna Placement — It’s Worth Planning Right

A sauna is a significant investment in your health, recovery, and lifestyle. Proper placement will not only extend the life of your unit but also improve your overall sauna experience. Whether it’s for detox, relaxation, pain relief or athletic recovery, we want your sauna to serve you well for years to come.

If you’re unsure whether your proposed outdoor location meets the recommended criteria, we encourage you to contact our team. We’re happy to assess photos or discuss your setup to ensure it will meet the necessary safety and durability standards.
